Book of Photography
Andy Westfall, a Humboldt County rancher, took gorgeous photographs and collected stories from ranchers for over a decade. We worked closely with him on the layout and typography. We took samples of the handwriting of Joe Russ, a pioneering Humboldt County rancher, and used them to create a typestyle for the book title and chapter headings. The result is a beautiful printed volume that captures the unique character of the land and ranching community on California’s remote north coast.
The Humboldt Area Foundation wanted to decrease the cost of their large annual report, and were looking to go with a new web-press on the north coast, rather than go out of the area to a more costly sheet-fed press. Having had experience with web printing, we adjusted the design accordingly. We designed a template that makes the publication recognizable, even though there’s a different theme every year.
